Short Description

Wolfsschluchtweg (“Wolf’s Gorge Trail”) is a medium length nature reserve hiking trail leading through the namesake gorge on one end, the Jura mountains in the middle, and through soft hills within a Lynx territory on the other side.

The original route is horseshoe shaped and requires taking a bus back to the starting point (if arriving by car) while my version completes the loop without sacrificing any length of trail and with minimal overlap while excluding any main roads.

Impressions

Wolfsschluchtweg felt like an ideal option for a mild May day and the start of the hiking season. We were also slightly underwhelmed and not challenged enough by Senda Ruinaulta the day before, so we decided to get right back to it and take it up a notch while we’re at it.

Wolfsschlucht itself proved to be a beautiful place, and the trees offered welcome shade during the relatively steep ascent through the gorge.

The forest gave way to alpine meadows and pleasant views of the Solothurn and Jura region.

Unsurprisingly, we didn’t see any Lynx while passing through their territory, thought that would have been fantastic.

Following my custom route, we briefly touched the periphery of Welschenrohr village where we met a friendly donkey and his protective horse friends, followed by a slight ascent back to Wolfsschlucht.

Overall it was a pleasant hike, not too populated, and just the right length for us beginners.
