Short Description

The ‘Des Franches-Montagnes au Doubs’ hiking trail in Jura, Switzerland, leads from the village of Le Noirmont down into the Doubs valley where it follows the river of the same name for a bit before ascending to the castle ruin de Spielberge and circling back to Le Noirmont.

Impressions

Having been a bit disenchanted with the concept of winter hiking, at least in the shape of the three routes we tried, this sunny spring day promised to usher in the new summer hiking season.

Since my wife couldn’t join me, I went with one of the hikes she was less excited about doing, but that was perfect for the day’s weather and temperatures. As a bonus, I always enjoy driving to and through the canton of Jura.

The River Doubs

Descending the valley from Le Noirmont, I had soon reached the Doubs river with its algae-green color, and strawen reed seamed banks. Up until this point I hadn’t met a soul.

Two bikers and one dog walker later, the relaxing walk along this beautiful river came to an end, to be followed by a short but steep ascent back up the valley.

There were a couple of nice spots along the way to sit and enjoy lunch with a view, but they were both occupied by the only other people I’d seen since the river. As such I thought it might be nice to have a late lunch from the castle ruins above, overlooking the whole valley.

Well…

A look back at the beautiful Jura landscape.

The view was nice indeed, but since the ruins come with a nearby parking spot, they were filled to the brink with people. Given the Covid situation I wasn’t comfortable spending more time there than necessary to take a picture (incidentally, I can apparently hold my breath for about 30 seconds while walking), let alone to have lunch.

So lunch came a bit later, shortly before the village and with a view that was slightly less spectacular, yet still charming in its own way.

I enjoyed this hike and day a lot (except for the crowded ruin) and would like to come back to the region again soon.
